Questions

  1. Which of the following films won the Oscar for Best Film: "Citizen Kane", "The Grapes of Wrath", "High Noon", "It's a Wonderful Life", "The Maltese Falcon", "Raging Bull" or "The Third Man"?

  2. Over the last ten years, nine films have received ten or more Oscar nominations. Name three of them. This question covered the ten years up to the 1998 Oscars (the 1999 ceremony). Up to the 2025 Oscars (the 2026 ceremony) the following films have also joined this collection: "The Artist", "The Aviator", "The Brutalist", "Chicago", "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", "Dune", "Emelia Perez", "Everything Everywhere All at Once", "Gangs of New York", "Gladiator", "Gravity", "Hugo", "The Irishman", "Joker", "Killers of the Flower Moon", "The King's Speech", "La La Land", "Life of Pi", "Lincoln", "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King", "Mad Max: Fury Road", "Mank", "1917", "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", "One Battle After Another", "Oppenheimer", "Poor Things", "The Power of the Dog", "The Revenant", "The Shape of Water", "Slumdog Millionaire", "Sinners" and "Wicked".

  3. Which of the following films won the greatest number of Oscar nominations: "The Big Sleep", "His Girl Friday", "Home Alone", "Kind Hearts and Coronets" and "Paths of Glory"?

  4. Why did Barry Norman not include "The Cruel Sea" in his list of the 100 best films of the century?

  5. The film ratings on the Internet Movie Database vary sufficiently to foil my attempt to ask you which is the top rated film by their users, however four of these films are in their top ten (or thereabouts) but one doesn't make the top one hundred. Which is the odd one out from "Citizen Kane", "Casablanca", "Star Wars", "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "The Shawshank Redemption"? This question no longer works. The original answer is now not even the lowest rated of these films, only one of which remains in the top ten, but all of which are in or just outside the top hundred.

  6. Which person has won the greatest number of Oscars?

  7. Adjusted for inflation what were three most successful Hollywood films ever? The original answers are now three of the six most successful films, the others in the top six being "Avatar", "Titanic" and "Avengers: Endgame".

  8. Three of the four top-grossing British pictures have been written by Richard Curtis (and collaborators). What is the other one? This question got out of date very quickly. The first film to reduce Richard Curtis's hit rate was "East is East", and there have been others since.

  9. Two films have received Oscar nominations for all the members of their cast. Name either.

  10. Two actors received seven Oscar nominations each, but no awards. Name either. One of those two later received an eighth nomination, and Glenn Close has joined the list of those with now eight nominations but no wins.
